SGU Network Access and Policy

About

Information System & Technology Department is working to provide many of the Information Technology and/or Electronic services for Students, Lecturers and staff of the programs used, hosted sites, and incubated projects.

It also provides wired and wireless network services for students and staff.

Information System & Technology (IST) entrusted with the tasks of building and development, operation and maintenance of infrastructure for information technology. This infrastructure includes:  networking, database applications, overseeing the network servers, operating systems. IST include specializing sections in specific fields, in order to provide better service to all users – staff, students – those characterized by high quality and quickly service. It also provides advisory services for the University as a whole in the relevant areas.

 IST Department consists of four sections:

Networks Department

Work fields of this section:

  • Planning and management of the network infrastructure in University.
  • Follow-up Internet service with Internet provider.
  • Follow-up wireless network in University.
  • Monitor network performance through special software.

Development Department

Work fields of this section:

  • Support the development and implementation of operating systems and software for network infrastructure, and all related services.
  • Follow new technological developments for network servers, to improve the network services provided to users.
  • Follow modern software, in addition to new versions of the software currently used, in order to integrate them into the existing work environment.
  • Apply network security policies, and monitor any misuse of network resources.

Operation Department

Work fields of this section:

  • Provide technical support and advisory service for university staff and students who are users of the systems and networks to ensure operational and optimal use.
  • Network Accounts Management for university employees (create new accounts – existing processes relating to the accounts)
  • Databases accounts for administrative staff.
  • Manage e-mail accounts for staff and university students, as well as alternative Email for staff.
  • Management of Internet participation.
  • Management of file storage services and related permissions in the interest of work.
  • Work to monitor errors and technical notes that preventing it to be handled and to propose solutions for it.
  • The development of guidance advertisements for information systems to raise the level of performance and efficiency, especially with emerging ones.
  • Any other duties within the scope of specialization.

Technical Support

Department is working to support and provide maintenance services for the university devices and related accessories and the best efforts in the service of the staff, also it considered one of the IST Department at Swiss German University

  • Technical support for staff and students on Prominence Tower and Laboratory
  • Maintenance any Hardware and Software on Staff Laptop/Desktop
  • Installation, Maintenance and Troubleshoot Printers
  • Make sure all IT Devices already have Genue Software/OS
  • Make sure all IT Devices have standard SGU ICT Applications
  • Make sure all IT Devices Privileges already configure as an ICT its devices basic policy
 

Networking and Communication Policy

General Network Services

Office computers is a laptop and desktop used by faculty and staff, as well as public, lab and shared computers, are connected to the University network by a 1-Gbps Ethernet connection.

Each Office computer must have antivirus and daily updated.

IST recommend Avast antivirus as a standard Office computer virus protection.  

Firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems are in place throughout the University network to provide enhanced security features and to ensure safety for all network clients. 

All external connectivity is handled by dual ISP (internet service provider) with 40-Mbps internet bandwidth for staff Internet connection and 20-Mbps internet bandwidth for Student internet connection.

Internet connection is manage using bandwidth manager to distribute stable connection for each Office computer internet connection.

Wireless Network Connectivity

Swiss German University provide wireless connectivity for registered staff, students, and Lecturers in most buildings and classroom on campus. In order to support as many different student devices as possible, Swiss German University wireless networks using ARUBA wireless devices and securing with secure login access. Staff, lecturers and student must use they SGU account to authenticate with university wireless network.

Swiss German University provide two static wireless connection or access point, SGU wireless networks that may appear:

SGU CLASSROOM: is dedicated for student’s wireless connection and login with student id

SGU-AP: is dedicated for Staff’s wireless connection and login with firstname.lastname on SGU Account.

Network Access for Visitors and Guests

Visitors are those people who visit the campus for short periods of time and their identity is not authenticated.   Visitors may attend events in designated locations. 

Guests visit for defined periods of time and the identity of a guest is authenticated by showing and recording a picture ID or through event registration.

Visitors and Guest may be registered by accompanied students, lecturers, and staff. 

Students, lecturers, and staff interacting with visitors/Guest may provide short-term network access by requesting the access with IST Dept.  The network registration process is located at https://helpdesk.sgu.ac.id.

Network Access for Events

In some locations and with advance planning, temporary network access can be arranged for an official university event. The sponsoring department should contact Information System & Technology Department by email or https://helpdesk.sgu.ac.id. Event planning details are needed as early as possible before the event date. IST Dept will analyze the request and provide a response about possibilities and advise.

Network Policies and Security

Access and use may be limited, restricted, or suspended in situations where there is an abnormally excessive usage of resources, suspicious or illegal activity.

All non-wireless computers must connect directly to a network jack on the wall. Unless prior written consent has been granted, no desktop hubs, switches, or routers are permitted. Unapproved devices will be removed by IST Dept.

Network Access Limitation

Swiss German University may control access inside or outside network.  Only authorized Staff, Lecturers and Student allowed on SGU Network.  Staff, Lecturers and Student may access the private application by permit from the IST Dept

Authorized Users must respect and value privacy rights, behave ethically, and comply with all legal restrictions regarding the use of information that is the property of others.

Network access VPN

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secured private network connection built on top of a public network, such as the internet.

VPN access is controlled using ID and password authentication. For Faculty and Staff, the ID is their SGU account.

Unauthorized users are not allowed access to the SGU VPN network.

All login, access and activity using VPN will monitored and logged for security and fraud audit.

To get VPN access SGU Staff must fill the VPN access form by contacting IST Department
